2018 NC Youth Summit: From Fear to Fearless

On Friday, April 13, 2018, the NC Youth Summit Committee welcomed nearly 324 registered guests to the 12th Annual NC Youth Summit in Cary, NC. The summit was held at the Embassy Suites in Cary, NC on April 13-14, 2018. The Summit was Co-Chaired by Lora Aples of the Northeastern Workforce Development Board and Solomon McAuley of the Centralina Workforce Development Board. The theme of this year’s Summit was “Fear to Fearless” and was facilitated by Darryl Bellamy Jr. and Inspire The Culture, LLC.

During the opening session, Ms. Valarie Sachariat, chair of the Capital Area Workforce Development Board, welcomed all attendees to the Capital Area Workforce Development Board region and shared how excited she was to be there representing the board. Greetings were also given by Ms. Lori Bush, Mayor Pro Tem of Cary NC, who welcomed everyone in attendance.

Throughout the course of the two-day event, the following workshops were offered:

  • Fearful to Fearless-You Scared? Why? Conquering Your Fears to Take Over
  • Preparation Creates Separation (Slight Edge)
  • You Define Yourself: Until They Look At Your Profile (Cultivating Influence)
  • Stop Dreaming: Start Doing (Bold)
  • The Fearless Breaking
  • The Mentor, The Coach, The Teacher: Which One Should I Be And When?

In addition, the summit included college and industry tours, vendor booths, networking socials, and a Summit Idol competition.

This year, the planning committee invited two of the 2017 Governor’s NCWorks Awards of Distinction winners to the NC Youth Summit as guest speakers during the evening gala. Ms. Destiny Mader, who was the 2017 Governor’s NCWorks Award of Distinction
recipient for the Outstanding Young Adult, and Ms. Nadja Brown, who was the 2017 Governor’s NCWorks Award of Distinction recipient for the Outstanding Teen, spoke to a room full of their peers encouraging them to push past fears, work hard, and build positive relationships.

The 2018 NC Youth Summit Honoree was Mr. Damien D. Neville, NextGen Program Manager for Turning Point Workforce Development Board. He was honored for his service on the Youth Summit Planning Committee for the 12 years of its existence.
